Badwater beats

This is Jen and a support team member at sunrise on day two.

In the July issue of explore I interviewed Jen Segger, a runner and adventure racer based in Squamish, to get some advice on how to train effectively. She told me about her training regime and her mental capacity for pain - see page 55 Put Your Pain Away. At the time she was just back from a multi-day adventure race and was ramping up her running for the Badwater Ultramarathon - a prestigious suffer-fest she had been invited to.

The 217 kilometre Badwater is one of the toughest running races in the world going from the 40+ degree heat of Death Valley to the slopes of Mount Whitney, gaining 13,000 feet along the way. This year the race was held on July 13 and 14 and Jenn was on the starting line for her first Badwater.

She did really well finishing 9th overall, the 5th female. It took her 32:31:57 to finish the equivalent of five marathons. Way to go Jen! She's now switching gears training for a 7 day multi-sport race in South Africa. Jenn maintains a fun blog of her adventures. Check it out at challengebychoice.ca. The women's winner, third place overall, was Jamie Donaldson. She set a new women's course record in just under 27 hours: 26:51:33. On the men's side Jorge Pachaco won in 23:20:16. One other Canadian competed, Monica Scholz of Jersey, Ontario. She finished 11th in 34:54:00.
