My Outdoor Life, consolidated
I have too many fragmented blogs, with too few posts. So here's one catch-all blog until something else really picks up steam.
A bit of magic in the morning
This morning I was riding my bike in to work, at about 6:15 in the morning -- well before sunrise. My route takes me along the bike path that follows Lakeshore Boulevard, more or less, including a small bridge over the Don River (see the satellite view on the map on this page). This is right at the tail end of the Don, just before it hangs a sharp right into the Keating Channel.
The Keating is one of the worst decisions the city ever made, because somehow it disrupts the flow of the lower Don and makes a long stretch of the river pretty stagnant. So all this flotsam just gathers there -- branches, plastic bags, other floating garbage -- and sits on the surface until some big rain storm pushes it into Lake Ontario, I suppose.
But there I am, crossing the bridge in the dark, and what do I see floating in the water? Two big, pure white swans, sleeping with their beaks tucked under their wings. It was such a cool surprise for a Wednesday morning -- such elegant birds clearly thriving in such a crappy spot.
I tried to snap a photo with the camera on my BlackBerry, but this is all I got. You'll have to trust me on this one.
