Great Wilderness Clean-Up Final Tally
The total tally is in. Nancy Maddock (head organizer for the Great Wilderness Clean-Up 2008 project) is in. What an amazing event. Have a good look at how other places, including Brazil, US and the UK, contributed this year. This volunteer event started off just a few years ago with a bunch of paddlers - led by Nancy - cleaning up Algonquin park. Wow!
The winners for this year will be announced soon.

Special Mention - Tony & company were greeted in the town of Campina do Monte Alegre on Friday by 50 ladies of the Third Age Walking group, holding signs of The Great Wilderness Cleanup in Portuguese. There were dancers dressed in costume, too (not sure if this was before or after the cleanup). They walked with Tony to the first school, where about 100 students were waiting outside front of the school. They were then given a tour of the school, class by class. Tony spoke to 2 different groups of students at 2 schools on Friday, May 9th, 2008 - more than a total of 500 students! The students were very involved in the learning experience as the teachers were talking to them about it for a week before the event. A small garbage truck was needed to haul it away. Part of it was moved to the city central square. The garbage was sold to a recycling business in the city for “a symbolical price”. Tony also talked with the Mayor.

Hey Kevin, I discovered that the 1st Milton Venturers had 6 members to their team.
The sailing club also discovered a 'message in a bottle'.-- "a church 140th anniversary from 2003 and they'd put notes in bottles asking finders to call or write when/where the bottles were found." A very cool find!
