Sayulita, Mexico
Sayulita is a little piece of heaven located only 35 minutes from hectic Puerto Vallarta. The drive is easy with a rental car or the local bus from Puerto Vallarta or the airport is a good and cheap alternative as it stops right in the town.
The town is laid back with dirt roads, few restaurants and no big hotels or resorts. Having said that it has changed dramatically in the last 5-7 years as it expands and more North Americans have discovered its charms. The surf is usually very good for both beginners and intermediate surfers. There are two main surf spots in Sayulita: the first is located in front of the main village area and is good for beginners and longboarders, and the second is a faster break in front of the campground (with a rocky bottom) which is good for more advanced surfers. Waves are generally consistent with few off days.
Surfboard rentals can be found at Sunset Surf Shop right next to Don Pedros, Sininen Surf shop, Santa Crucita, and on the beach in front of the right break.
Surfers may want to bring a 1-2 millimeter rashguard for the early morning breezes but a wetsuit is never needed.
From Sayulita, surfing daytrips via boat or car can be arranged to visit the neighboring breaks to the north and south of the village.
Generally there is a great vibe in Sayulita. The locals are welcoming to new surfers.
Accommodation in Sayulita ranges from relatively expensive (Villa Amor - $150 - $300 USD) to cheap (campground right on the beach and only a 5 minute walk to downtown). Houses for rent are easy to find on the net as well. A great website for Sayulita vacation rentals is http://www.sayulitalife.com
Don Pedros is a great place for dinner or drinks as it is right on the beach in the middle of town. Choco Bananas is probably THE breakfast place after an early morning of surf. They also have a free wireless connection for paying customers.
