Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada
Algonquin Park is made up of 7,725 square kilometres of forests, lakes, and rivers.
One of the great things about Algonquin is that you can experience its beauty one of two ways: (i) through a well-planned canoe trip (or hiking trip) through its vast and remote interior or (ii) by camping, swimming and enjoying some walking trails along the 56 kilometers of highway (Highway 60) that runs through the park.
Reservations
Reservations are an absolute must and can be done via the phone at 1-888-668-7275 or online through ontarioparks.com (link is in the sidebar).

Shelter and gear options
When tripping in the interior, you have a couple of options other than tenting:
- Yurts (which needs a Guidebook entry of its own -- can you help?)
- Old park ranger lodges of various sizes and states of repair -- they sleep anywhere from 4 to several dozen people. Some are on the electric grid and are fairly well-equipped, while others are little more than a shack.
Several top-notch outfitters dot the highway in and around the park, providing canoe and gear rentals.
Logging in the park
One unpleasant surprise to dedicated hikers is that the province allows logging in the park's interior. The sustainability of this activity is up for debate.
