Ice climbing ropes
The ice climbing rope is similar to the rock ropes but are generally referred to as "dry" ropes. This is because of a protective coating that is put on by the manufacturer to protect the rope from water.
Even dry ropes get wet eventually and freeze up. It's best to retire your ice rope to rock climbing once it becomes fuzzy. Once the rope starts fuzzing up it absorbes too much water.
Rope lengths are generally 55 to 60 metres. When climbing ice it's a good idea to have two ropes. This is usually because rappels on ice and in the mountains are often longer than a single pitch.
