Toronto Bruce Trail Club
The Toronto Bruce Trail Club is one of the nine clubs of the Bruce Trail Conservancy whose mandate for over 40 years has been to establish, build, maintain and promote The Bruce Trail, Canada's oldest marked footpath The Bruce Trail has been built for the public so that all will see first hand the Niagara Escarpment a United Nations World Biospher Reserve, learn to appreciate it, and seek its protection.
The Toronto Bruce Trail Club is reponsible for the TORONTO SECTION of The Bruce Trail running along the Niagara Escarpment for over 50 kilometers plus 50 kilometers of side-trails.
But after their "real work" is done, Toronto club members enjoy over 450 outings to the Bruce Trail and others as well as Toronto urban trails year around. Group hikes, lead by certified, first-aid trained, volunteer hike leaders who know and love The Trail and the best places to hike on it get to The Trail by bus, car and car-pool. Many of these outings are open to the general public to help introduce Toronto residents to The Trail, The Niagara Escarpment and Ontartio's great outdoors. The Hikes are free! Donations are most welcome. You're welcome to send these directly to The Bruce Trail Conservancy. A charitable receipt is issued for donations above $10
Hikes leave year around, usually rain or shine, on most weekends but many mid week hikes are offered as well. Watch for those Thursday evening URBAN hikes of The Toronto Islands! No reservations are taken. Just show up at least a half hour ahead of departure time
BUS HIKES are the most popular means for the public to introduce themselve to The Trail and the outings program. Buses leave from just outside convenient subway stations (York Mills on the Yonge Line and Islington on the Bloor line) and Clarence Square (on the Spadina street car line betewwn King and Front). FREE PARKING nearby at all departure locations. . Bus fare for non-members is $20 return. Usual bus departure is around 9:00 am on Saturday's, 10:00 am on Sundays to allow for later subway start times. You're on The Trail and hiking in just over an hour. Hikers are back in the city by about 6:00 pm.
CAR HIKES mean hikers travel to the departure point with their own vehicle. Car shuttles are often part of the routine here. Driving directions are given in the hike description. Still puzzled by those directions? Get help by e-mailing the hike leader through information@torontobrucetrailclub.org
CAR-POOL HIKES are fairly rare but are something to watch out for in the public is invited listings. These start out similar to the bus hikes where they meet at the subway station, The hike leader helps to get as many hikers into as few cars as possible with passengers asked to offer a share of the gas.
