White-Water Kayaks

White-water kayaks are boats that are intended to be paddled on rivers with moving water. The paddler is generally enclosed in a spray skirt, a cloth or neoprene oval that fits snugly around the paddler's waist, and seals the cockpit of the boat when the paddler is sitting in it, to keep water from entering the boat.

White-water kayaks are paddled with a two-blade paddle. This is the primary distinction between kayaking and canoeing. The other main distinction is seating position: in kayaking, the paddler sits on his or her butt in a molded seat with a small back rest or supportive back band, whereas in canoeing the paddler generally kneels. The spray skirt is often a marker of kayaks, although whitewater canoes, and modified kakaks that are paddled from a kneeling position using a single-blade paddle (often called a C-1) also use spray skirts.
